Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – Danny Valencia homered and Stephen Vogt doubled twice in Oakland’s seven-run fifth inning, and the Athletics climbed out of a big hole against Hisashi Iwakuma for an 11-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. Josh Reddick also went deep and drove in three runs for the A’s, who rallied after starter Felix Doubront exited early with a bruised foot.
SEATTLE (AP) – Ron Washington, the former Texas Rangers manager, has been hired as the Oakland Athletics third base coach after the club dismissed Mike Gallego yesterday. The 63-year-old Washington spent 11 seasons as an A’s coach before becoming manager of the Rangers in 2007 and leading Texas to a pair of American League pennants in 2010-11. Washington re-joined Oakland as a coach in May to work with infielders, but couldn’t be in the dugout or on the bench for games.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Emmanuel Rodriguez hit two home runs to lead the Dominican Republic to a 7-3 win over Portland, Oregon, yesterday in a Little League World Series consolation game. Both teams both were eliminated from the Series on Saturday, but the Dominican Republic ended its all-star season by winning a game in which it never trailed. Nolan Miga and Kyle Oslund each had two hits for Portland.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Four-time defending Football Championship Subdivision champion North Dakota State University has lined up a game five years from now with Football Bowl Subdivision powerhouse Oregon. The matchup will be Sept. 5, 2020, in Eugene, Oregon, home of the Ducks. It will be NDSU’s first game against a Pac-12 opponent.
