GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A power outage in Grants Pass has caused 240,000 gallons of wastewater to be dumped into the Rogue River. The Mail Tribune reports that a blown transformer caused the outage Sunday. Officials say the amount of water was small in scale and should pose no hazards to wildlife or people downstream.
CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARK, Ore. (AP) – The entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail within Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park is now open. Wildfire dangers had closed a section of the trail from the park’s northern boundary to the junction with Lightning Springs Trail. Boundary Springs, Bald Crater Loop and Bert Creek trails remain closed.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Lane County and the Willamette National Forest are lifting their bans on campfires in the wake of cooler and wetter weather. The Register-Guard reports that campfires are now allowed in Lane County parks’ fire pits and at designated campgrounds equipped with metal fire rings in the Willamette forest. Lane County also lifted its partial closure of trails in the Mount Pisgah/Howard Buford Recreation Area.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Now that his stint at the Oregon State Fair is over, a prize-winning steer named Red Box will soon be feeding the needy. The Salem Statesman-Journal reports that Cascade High School students have been raising the steer with the intention to donate his beef to the Marion-Polk Food Share, where it will head to a food bank.
