KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Klamath County Sheriff Frank Skrah is asking a court to force seven deputies who are on non-disciplinary leave back to work. Skrah’s court petition for a preliminary injunction against the county and the deputies’ union alleges the deputies are conducting an illegal strike. The county placed the deputies on leave on Aug. 20, in light of an ongoing state criminal investigation of Skrah.
BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) – The small grocery chain Haggen is suing Albertsons for more than $1 billion, alleging the supermarket giant engaged in efforts to eliminate it as a viable competitor in five states. The lawsuit accuses Albertsons of anti-competitive practices. Haggen, based in Bellingham, Washington, says it was forced to lay off hundreds and close nearly a fifth of the stores it had acquired from Albertsons and Safeway.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A dozen homeless campers are looking for their next site as officials enforce city and county laws that ban overnight sleeping on public land. The Register-Guard reports campers have gathered on an undeveloped city park in south Eugene after being moved at least three times before. An advocate says forcing people to move every day or 10 days does not solve anything.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man who earned an award five years ago for stopping an armed bank robbery has pleaded guilty to robbing a bank. Mark Rothwell admitted he pointed a gun at two Portland bank tellers in February and fled with more than $16,500. In a plea agreement, the 50-year-old Rothwell is expected to be sentenced in December to seven years in federal prison.
