SEATTLE (AP) – Vidal Nuno allowed one hit over seven dominant innings for his first victory in more than a year, and Mark Trumbo and Kyle Seager each had four hits and a two-run homer to lead the Seattle Mariners past the Texas Rangers 6-0 last night. Nuno (1-2) had gone 20 starts without a win, which was tied with Atlanta right-hander Shelby Miller for the longest active stretch in the majors.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says holdout strong safety Kam Chancellor has not shown up at the team’s practice facility and won’t play on Sunday in the season opener against St. Louis. Carroll spoke yesterday as the Seahawks began preparations for the Rams. Carroll says he is disappointed Chancellor has chosen this route to express his displeasure with his contract situation.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Goalkeeper Tim Melia fended off a flurry of Portland shots and Sporting Kansas City snapped a three-game losing streak with a 0-0 draw with the Timbers last night. Melia had a career-high seven saves for his seventh shutout of the season, and first since a 1-0 victory at Vancouver on July 12. Both teams are locked in a battle for playoff position.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – The spread has helped the running game come roaring back in major college football. Last season, FBS teams rushed for 176 yards per game, the highest average since 1980. Though initially used mostly for passing, the spread has evolved. The teams that played for the national title last year, Ohio State and Oregon, both used run-based spread schemes.
