PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – University of Washington researchers are testing an earthquake alert system as the Pacific Northwest prepares for the day when a 600-mile-long fault line looming off the coast unleashes a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. The ShakeAlert system uses seismic sensors to detect harmless, fast-moving signals that precede stronger waves.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The first Republican has joined the race for governor of Oregon. Salem physician Bud Pierce announced his first campaign for elected office yesterday in front of the state Capitol. State Rep. Knute Buehler and former U.S. Senate candidate Monica Wehby, considered running but bowed out.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) – Sacramento is set to celebrate three hometown heroes who foiled an attack on a train in Europe. A parade down the Capitol Mall today will honor college student Anthony Sadler, Oregon National Guard specialist Alek Skarlatos and U.S. Airman Spencer Stone. Mayor Kevin Johnson says the day will include a rally on the steps of the California Capitol.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) – The fifth-ranked Michigan State Spartans host seventh-ranked Oregon tomorrow night in one of the most anticipated nonconference games of the year. It’s the first time in nearly a half-century that two AP top 10 teams will play at Spartan Stadium, and it’s a chance for Michigan State to avenge a 46-27 loss at Oregon last year.
