PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal grant could help the Portland Police Bureau make progress on a backlog of untested sexual assault kits that has more than doubled despite promises to eliminate it. The Oregonian reports the bureau had more than 1,000 untested kits in 2001,. Portland police now have more than twice as many untested kits – more than 2,400. Last week the bureau was approved for a $2 million federal grant to track and test the kits.

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – Hillsboro police say they’re investigating after a man in his early 20s was shot to death in the middle of a street. A responding officer found the man down in the middle of Baseline Street. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene; police have not confirmed his identity. Police say they don’t know how the victim and suspect were acquainted.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Oregon arrested a man who posted a threat on the Internet suggesting he planned to kill former teachers at two Christian schools he attended. The Oregonian reports that 29-year-old Zachariah Peterson of Portland was arrested on Friday morning after police and federal agents traced the IP address on a disturbing online post.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Starting next year, the large nonprofit health plan Kaiser Permanente will open a medical and dental clinic in Eugene. The Register-Guard reports Kaiser’s arrival spells some relief for the local shortage of primary care doctors. Kaiser initially plans to bring in four physicians. It will also bring a dentist and hygienist. The medical clinic will serve 6,000 patients, including 4,000 students.
