BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) – An Eastern Oregon wildfire has grown to nearly 20 square miles. The Dry Gulch fire is burning northwest of Richland. Crews are trying to stop it from spreading farther east into the rugged terrain near the Snake River. Gov. Kate Brown has mobilized fire crews from other areas of the state to protect homes and businesses in the fire’s path. Rain is possible this morning.

Reno, Nev. (AP) – Another 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit northwest Nevada, tying the largest in a year-long swarm recorded at the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge near the Oregon border. The University of Nevada’s Reno Nevada Seismological Laboratory said in August that a flare-up since mid-July had brought the total to more than 5,600 earthquakes.

CASCADIA, Ore. (AP) – The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says a 61-year-old man fell 100 feet to his death while on a camping trip. Authorities say Stephen Bass of Toledo was hiking with his wife when he fell from a cliff near Gordon Meadows, about 60 miles southeast of Albany in the Cascades. The investigation is ongoing.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Chemists at Portland State University have been granted $3.5 million in federal funding to study the potential dangers of e-cigarettes. The Oregonian reports PSU released a statement saying the five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health will go toward a comprehensive examination of the health effects of e-cigarettes. Their most recent study shows that vaping devices can deliver formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
