SEATTLE (AP) – Shawn O’Malley damaged Houston’s playoff hopes with a two-run, bases-loaded single in the eighth inning that gave the Seattle Mariners a 6-4 comeback victory over the Astros yesterday. The Astros were displaced in the American League wild-card chase by the Los Angeles Angels. The New York Yankees maintains the top wild-card spot with the Angels now second. Houston slips a half-game behind Los Angeles.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Martin Jones made 30 saves to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks yesterday. Tommy Wingels and Brent Burns scored for the Sharks. Burns’ goal at 7:43 of the second period was the game-winner. Jared McCann scored Vancouver’s only goal. Ryan Miller made 20 saves on 22 shots.
SEATTLE (AP) – Jerry Dipoto believes the Seattle Mariners don’t need a major overhaul at the major league level to create a contender. Dipoto was introduced as Seattle’s new general manager yesterday. Dipoto said that Seattle’s core is solid with the likes of Felix Hernandez, Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz but the challenge will be deepening the bench, pitching rotation and bullpen.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Varsity athletes in a west Eugene school district will sport all Nike apparel for games under a unanimously approved exclusive agreement. The Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/1FBagH7) Bethel School Board members voted Monday to put varsity players completely in Nike during games in exchange for $15,000 in rebates for five years.
