EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A former kitchen worker at a University of Oregon sorority house is suing Kappa Alpha Theta for wrongful termination. The Register-Guard reports Noel Roberts’ lawsuit says her face and hair were burned in a gas leak from a stove at the sorority house. Roberts also claims she was required to work 12 hours a day without breaks. Sorority officers didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) – A McMinnville steel mill has been fined more than $7,000 for violating its water pollution permit. The Statesman Journal reports Cascade Steel Rolling Mills is being fined because it stopped performing required monthly water sampling for lead and zinc.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland’s Broadway Bridge will be closed to motor vehicles through Oct. 27 during a repainting project. The Oregonian reports sidewalks on the bridge will remain open to pedestrians and bicyclists.
UNDATED (AP) – A review by The Associated Press finds that colleges across the U.S. vary widely in their efforts to prepare students and employees for surviving a shooting rampage on campus. Some campuses make “active shooter” training mandatory for incoming students. Others offer little more than brief online guidance on what to do with a gunman on the loose. The AP looked at public colleges and universities in more than 40 states after yet another shooting, the killing of nine people at Umpqua Community College on Oct. 1.
