SANDY, Utah (AP) – Fanendo Adi scored on a penalty kick in the 54th minute, and the Portland Timbers beat 10-man Real Salt Lake 1-0 last night for their third straight road win in the series. Portland (13-11-8) moved into a tie with Seattle for fifth in the Western Conference. Real Salt Lake (11-13-8) is tied for eighth.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum has been given a five-year contract. The Vikings opened the season with their first-ever victory over a Pac-12 team. Barnum had been the Vikings’ offensive coordinator but he was elevated last year when the Portland State dismissed Nigel Burton after five seasons. Portland State opened the season with a 24-17 upset of Washington State.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Oregon State has been picked to repeat as Pac-12 women’s basketball champion by the league’s coaches. Reigning Pac-12 Coach of the Year Scott Rueck’s Beavers won the Pac-12 regular-season crown last season for the first time in school history and are bumping perennial power Stanford from the top spot for the first time in 16 years.

HOUSTON (AP) – Former New England Patriots offensive lineman Sam Adams has died in Houston at the age of 67. Rodney Coleman of Coleman’s Mortuary in Jasper says Adams became ill at his Houston home last Saturday and died at a hospital. He joined the Seahawks in 1994 and his NFL career through 2007 included stops in Baltimore, Oakland, Buffalo, Cincinnati and Denver.
