Luca Sbisa, Radim Vrbata and Derek Dorsett had the other goals for the Canucks (4-2-3), while Brandon Prust added two assists as Vancouver snapped a four-game losing streak and won for the first time on home ice in six tries this season.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Timberwolves will wear a commemorative patch on their jerseys during the new season honoring team president and coach Flip Saunders. Saunders died Sunday after battling cancer. The team says it will wear the patch for all home and road games starting with Monday’s home opener against the Portland Trail Blazers. A pregame tribute to Saunders also is planned that night.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) – NBA MVP Stephen Curry showed in a hurry he hasn’t lost a step or his swagger, scoring 40 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 111-95 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans last night to open their title defense. Curry put on a familiar shooting clinic from all over the court, knocking down seven of his first nine shots with four 3-pointers for 24 first-quarter points.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee guard/forward Jaime Nared has broken her left hand, putting her status for the start of the season in jeopardy. Lady Vols coach Holly Warlick estimates that Nared would miss three to four weeks but added that the 6-foot-2 sophomore will undergo further examination. Nared, who is from Portland, Oregon, averaged 5.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 15.7 minutes per game last season.
