BEND, Ore. (AP) – A college student has sued Central Oregon Community College, claiming officials brushed aside his pleas to assign him to a different dorm room before he was stabbed by his roommate. The Oregonian reports James Briles’ lawsuit says he told officials he wanted to switch rooms because Eric Norgaard repeatedly yelled loudly and angrily “about seemingly nonsensical things” and Briles didn’t feel safe. Norgaard is facing attempted murder and other charges.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon college where a gunman killed nine people and himself last month will have a patrol officer from the county sheriff’s office on campus for the rest of the year. The Roseburg News-Review reports the lack of an armed guard on campus sparked widespread debate in the days following the Oct. 1 shooting. The college considered hiring a guard about a year before shooting but opted against it.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The operator of a Roseburg medical marijuana dispensary has surrendered the shop’s license after state officials found several violations. The Oregonian reports that Jesse Rogers, who registered CannaKing with the Oregon Health Authority, has agreed to pay $4,000 for eight violations.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The basement of the Jackson County Jail, which houses about 62 inmates, will be closed due to a staff shortage. The Mail Tribune reports that $2.7 million was spent to remodel the basement last year to house the additional inmates. County Commissioner Rick Dyer says the county is prepared with the necessary funds to train and hire the needed personnel.
