SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Springfield officials are expecting a new 62-foot-tall sculpture that would serve as an entryway to the city to be completed next summer. The Register-Guard reports the $236,000 taxpayer-funded project called the Springfield Flame will be installed in the Gateway area. The city says the sculpture will attract Interstate 5 travelers to the area populated with retailers, hotels and restaurants.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The city of Eugene is preparing to buy land for a 50- to 60-unit low-income housing complex. The Register-Guard reports the City Council is set to authorize spending today of up to $525,000 for the 3 acres of land on River Road. The land will be purchased mainly using federal grants.
FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say thieves broke into a remote Florence-area fire station and stole about $1,200 in equipment. The Eugene Register-Guard reports Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue says two generators, two handheld radios, a heat detector, a chainsaw and a computer were stolen. The items are insured. But until they’re replaced, the thefts may affect the ability of volunteer firefighters to respond to calls from the station.
REEDSPORT, Ore. (AP) – One person is dead and three others are injured after a head-on crash on Highway 101 about four miles south of Reedsport. Oregon State Police say Heather Walseth of Evans, Washington, died from her injuries. She had been a front center passenger in a pickup truck that was hit head on by an SUV that crossed the center line Saturday afternoon.
