PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An armed sheriff’s deputy will begin patrolling an Oregon college where a gunman killed nine people and himself last month. The Oregonian reports that Douglas County deputy Scott Batsch began patrols at Umpqua Community College yesterday. Batsch is a recently retired deputy with experience as a school resource officer.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The state medical examiner’s office says the man who was fatally shot by police near Good Samaritan Medical Center in Portland pointed a gun at officers and intended for police to kill him. The Oregonian reports deputy medical examiner Dr. Cliff Nelson has ruled the Friday death of Michael Johnson a suicide based on those findings. Nelson says Johnson died of multiple gunshot wounds, none of which were self-inflicted.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Eugene officials will consider whether to increase the minimum wage for city employees to $15. The Register-Guard reports that Councilor Claire Syrett had requested that the City Council discuss the pay hike for city workers. She is also looking to make it a requirement for companies that do business with the city to have a $15 minimum wage.
SEATTLE (AP) – As the grocery chain Haggen looks to shed many of its stores during bankruptcy proceedings, Albertsons has come to take its locations back. Many of the stores for sale were purchased from Albertsons and Safeway in December. Albertsons is bidding on stores in Washington, Oregon and Arizona. Albertsons was forced to sell the stores last year by the Federal Trade Commission when it merged with Safeway.
