PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The head of Columbia Sportswear has announced he will give $10 million to the University of Oregon’s zebrafish facility to help expand genomics research. The Oregonian reports the donation by Tim Boyle will go to study zebrafish, vertebrates that are transparent during the embryo stage, making them easier to observe. The school’s website says their embryonic development is “remarkably similar” to humans.

UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – Oregon prison officials say a 60-year-old inmate serving time for killing his girlfriend has died at a Portland area hospital after being found unresponsive in his cell. Prison staff found Joel Abbott at the Two Rivers prison in Umatilla on Saturday. The Bend Bulletin reports that Abbott was serving a life sentence for killing Carolann Payne. She was 35 when she disappeared in 1985. Her body was never found.

BOARDMAN, Oregon (AP) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved an $11 million loan for a project to build a biorefinery in Boardman that would convert farm waste into natural gas and liquid fertilizer. The East Oregonian reports Minnesota-based Novus Energy plans to build the $25 million facility at the Port of Morrow. The company plans to break ground this summer.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Damian Lillard had 33 points and five rebounds to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a 111-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers yesterday. CJ McCollumn and Gerald Henderson each scored 19 points for the Trail Blazers, who have won 8 of 9 games.
