LAS VEGAS (AP) – Oregon received a surprising No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament, joining Kansas, North Carolina and Virginia with top billing. The Ducks (28-6) are a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history.
Rival Oregon State is back in the bracket for the first time in a generation. The Beavers ended a 26-year NCAA Tournament drought and were one of a conference-record seven Pac-12 teams.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – Central Oregon Community College is trying new marketing strategies and reducing rates to draw more students to its new residence hall, which remains about one-third empty. College officials had high hopes for the $21 million, 330-bed hall.
SWEET HOME, Ore. (AP) – Fire officials say one person has died in an apartment fire in Sweet Home early Sunday. The Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District says the victim’s identity has not been released.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The city of Portland is a finalist for a $50 million grant to build a street grid to help promote self-driving cars and other alternatives to driving.
The Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/1QPdNDF ) that U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced at the South by Southwest Interactive technology conference in Austin, Texas, that Portland and six other cities have been selected as a finalist for the department’s Smart Cities Challenge.
COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – Federal regulators have denied a permit for a liquefied natural gas terminal in the southern Oregon coastal town of Coos Bay. The World reports the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission issued the 25-page ruling Friday, saying the Jordan Cove Energy Project would adversely impact landowners. The ruling also says there’s little evidence to support the need for a pipeline.
