Prep sports Saturday…
Gabe Simington struck out ten and gave scattered four hits over six innings and Siuslaw dominated the Tigers 12-2 in the first half of a non-league baseball double header in Junction City. In game two, Kenneth Thrall was credited with a save and Michael Larson picked up the win and the Vikings came out on top 7-5. Caleb Paredes was 5-for-8 at the plate on the day.
On the softball diamond, Siuslaw edged Junction City at home Saturday 4-3. Heidi Jones and Nikki Lanius (LONN-ee-uss) were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Jones Struck out six for the win in the circle.
On the track… Trent Reavis is challenging one of the oldest track and field records at Siuslaw…. The Viking sophomore won the shot put at Saturday’s Junction City Invitational with a throw of 51-feet, 2 ½ inches. That’s nearly five feet further than his previous best and 10 ½ inches short of the school record set by Bruce Plaep in 1972. Reavis set a P-R in the discus, winning that event with a toss of 133-feet; 5-inches.
Murray Bingham won the 3-thousand meters for Siuslaw, followed closely by Jack Pickell in second.
For the girls, Morgan Bingham won the 800 and the 3,000. Celie Mans won the 15-hundred. Mikaela Siegel picked up victory in the 100-meter hurdles and was second in the 300 hurdles. She also won the triple-jump. Destinie Tatum won the high jump; Abby Watkins the long jump.
On the college diamond…
Michigan State beat the Ducks 3-2 in ten innings Friday afternoon for non-league baseball in East Lansing, Michigan. Saturday and Sunday’s games were snowed out and will not be made up.
Oregon State won the first two games of a three game Pac-12 series against Washington over the weekend in Corvallis, coming out on top 10-2 Friday and 5-4 Saturday. The Huskies won the final game of the series 3-2 yesterday in 12 innings.
College Basketball…
Top ranked U-Conn routed Oregon State 80-51 yesterday afternoon in Indianapolis, sending the Huskies on to the championship game in the women’s NCAA Basketball tournament. The Beavers ended the season 32-5.
