MARINERS-RANGERS
Servais’ 1st win for Mariners is chippy 10-2 rout of Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nelson Cruz hit one of four Seattle homers, fellow former Texas player Leonys Martin had a tiebreaking double and the Mariners bounced back from an opening day loss to beat the Rangers 10-2 Tuesday night.
Scott Servais, who spent six years in player development with Texas, got his first win as a manager while having a shouting match with reigning AL Manager of the Year Jeff Banister.
The pair exchanged words after former Seattle reliever Tom Wilhelmsen hit Chris Iannetta with a pitch. Wilhelmsen, who was ejected, had just given up the second of two homers along with two doubles without getting an out in a six-run Seattle eighth.
Nick Vincent (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Texas reliever Tony Barnette (0-1) lost in his major league debut at age 32 after six seasons in Japan.

PORTLAND-PORTER
Terry Porter introduced as new Portland Pilots coach
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Former NBA player and coach Terry Porter has been formally introduced as the new coach at the University of Portland.
The Pilots announced Porter as the team’s new head coach late last week, but some 500 fans greeted him on Tuesday at a press conference on the court at the Chiles Center.
Porter replaces Eric Reveno, who was dismissed last month after 10 years with the Pilots.
Porter played for the Blazers from 1985-95, anchoring a team that went to the Western Conference finals three times from 1990 to 1992 and to the NBA Finals twice.
The starters on that team were Porter, Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey, Buck Williams and Kevin Duckworth, but the group would never win a title.
GYM-NICHOLS INJURED
Knee injury forces gymnast Nichols out of Pacific Rims
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Maggie Nichols’ bid to make the U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team hit a roadblock on Tuesday when she was forced to withdraw from Saturday’s Pacific Rim championships with a knee injury.
Ragan Smith will replace Nichols on the six-woman U.S. team at the international event in suburban Seattle. USA Gymnastics said Nichols is dealing with a “slight” knee issue suffered after national team coordinator Martha Karolyi announced the team for Pacific Rims last Sunday.
The 18-year-old Nichols was part of the gold-medal winning U.S. squad at the 2015 world championships. She competed in all four events during team finals, the only American to do so, as the U.S. rolled to its third straight world title.
Smith finished second in the all-around to defending Olympic champion Gabby Douglas at the Jesolo Cup in Italy last month.

Rehabbing DB Ekpre-Olomu claimed off waivers by Dolphins
MIAMI (AP) — Defensive back Ifo Ekpre-Olomu has been claimed off waivers by the Miami Dolphins, who hope he can return from a serious knee injury.
Ekpre-Olomu was projected to be a first-round draft pick before he hurt his left knee in his senior season with Oregon. He was instead taken in the seventh round by Cleveland a year ago and spent 2015 rehabilitating.
The Browns released him last week.
“A potential steal,” tweeted Dolphins linebacker Spencer Paysinger, who also played at Oregon.
