Splash Brothers Curry, Thompson send Warriors to West finals

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Klay Thompson scored 33 points with six 3-pointers, Stephen Curry added 29 and sealed it with a 3 with 24.9 seconds left, and the Golden State Warriors advanced to the Western Conference finals for the second straight season with a 125-121 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 5 on Wednesday night.

Curry finished with five 3s a day after becoming the first unanimous MVP in NBA history. He added 11 assists after returning to the starting lineup for the first time all series because of a knee injury.

Draymond Green, who had his left ankle re-taped in the fourth quarter, had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists after guaranteeing Golden State would advance from this game.

Damian Lillard scored 28 points and CJ McCollum had 27 for the Trail Blazers.

RAYS-MARINERS

Iannetta’s HR lifts Mariners past Rays 6-5 in 11

SEATTLE (AP) — Chris Iannetta led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a homer to give the Seattle Mariners a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday and a sweep of the three-game series.

Iannetta jumped on a 3-2 pitch from Steve Geltz (0-1) for his third homer for Seattle, which was unable to hold an early 4-0 lead.

The Mariners escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the 10th. Steven Souza Jr. reached on a one-out walk off Vidal Nuno, advanced on a passed ball and moved to third on Logan Morrison’s bloop single to left.

Steve Johnson (1-0) relieved and walked Steve Pearce to load the bases. Kevin Kiermaier fouled out to third and Hank Conger bounced into a force at second.

The Rays tied it 5-5 on Kiermaier’s one-out solo homer in the ninth.

MLS-TIMBERS-FC DALLAS

Hollingshead, Zimmerman score in FC Dallas’ 2-1 win

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Ryan Hollingshead and Walker Zimmerman each scored their first goal of the season — two minutes apart — and FC Dallas beat the Portland Timbers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Hollingshead scored in the 55th minute to end Dallas’ three-plus game scoreless stretch. His pass was deflected into the area and he raced to the loose ball to score with the outside of his foot. Zimmerman then headed in Mauro Diaz’s corner kick for a 2-1 lead.

Dallas (6-4-2) was coming off a winless and goal-less three-game road swing. It was outscored 8-0 during the stretch and didn’t have too many scoring chances in the first half against Portland.

The Timbers put FC Dallas in the hole in the third minute. Lucas Melano battled to gain possession on a cross and found an open Diego Valeri in front of goal.

Portland (3-5-3) has one win in seven games at Dallas.

SEAHAWKS-OFFENSIVE LINE

Seahawks to shuffle offensive line

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks’ offensive line will sport a different look next season.

The Seattle Times reports this week the team could begin training camp this summer with only center Patrick Lewis playing in the same spot as last season. But coach Pete Caroll also suggests Lewis will see competition for the spot, with the team planning to move Justin Britt to center. Britt played at left guard last season and at right tackle in 2014 as a rookie out of Missouri.

The Seahawks wrapped up rookie minicamp over the weekend with the drills including new linemen Germain Ifedi of Texas A and M, Rees Odhiambo of Boise State, and Joey Hunt of TCU. Carroll says the Seahawks are looking to have their rookies start out in spots where they could have the most immediate impact.

SEAHAWKS-LOCKETTE

Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette retiring

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette is retiring six months after suffering a serious neck injury in a game at Dallas.

The team confirmed the retirement and has scheduled a news conference with Lockette on Thursday.

Lockette was knocked out and remained motionless on the field for several minutes after a hit by Cowboys safety Jeff Heath during the November 1st victory at Dallas. He was eventually strapped to a backboard and taken off the field. Lockette underwent surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas the next day to stabilize his neck.

Lockette has been a special teams standout for the Seahawks since joining the team in 2011. He’s also been part of Seattle’s rotation of receivers.

JAMES-STATUE

Former players raise money for statue honoring James.

SEATTLE (AP) — A group of former University of Washington football players is raising money to put up a statue of former coach Don James outside Husky Stadium.

The players have so far raised roughly $70,000 in the effort and hope to raise another $80,000 by July. They have also set up a website (DonJamesStatue DOT com) where fans can contribute.

Organizers of the effort tell The Seattle Times the goal is to unveil the statue this fall and dedicate it during Washington’s game against USC on November 12th

James was coach at Washington from 1975 to 1992 and is the school’s winningest football coach, with his Huskies teams going to six Rose Bowls and sharing a national title in 1991. He died in 2013.
