Martin, Cano help Mariners sweep, hand Reds 7th loss in row

CINCINNATI (AP) — Leonys Martin got four hits, Robinson Cano drove in two runs and the Seattle Mariners swept Cincinnati 5-4 Sunday, sending the Reds to their seventh straight loss.

Steve Clevenger hit a tiebreaking single during a three-run fifth inning. The Mariners won all three games at Great American Ball Park and posted their fourth win in a row.

The Reds went 0-5 on their homestand. Brandon Phillips drove in two runs with a double during a three-run first inning and Adam Duvall later hit his eighth homer.

Wade Miley (5-2) shook off that rocky first inning to last six innings, giving up eight hits and four runs with six strikeouts and a walk. He improved to 5-0 over his last six starts, all Seattle victories.

Steve Cishek pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save.

MARINERS-MARTE

Mariners place Marte on 15-day DL, recall Taylor

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed shortstop Ketel Marte on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb and recalled infielder Chris Taylor from Triple-A Tacoma before Sunday’s game in Cincinnati.

Taylor, 25, hit .294 with two home runs and 14 RBIs over 39 games, 33 at shortstop, with Tacoma. Taylor played for Seattle in both 2014 and 2015, hitting a combined .239 with 10 RBIs in 84 games.

Marte, 22, left Saturday’s game at Cincinnati in the bottom of the fifth inning after spraining his left thumb sliding into second base on a stolen base in the top of the fifth inning. In 40 games this season, Marte is hitting .276 with one home run and 14 RBIs.

MLS-WHITECAPS-TIMBERS

Timbers beat Whitecaps 4-2 in Cascadia Cup rivalry

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Diego Valeri scored on a penalty kick in the opening minutes and the Portland Timbers rolled to a 4-2 victory over Cascadia Cup rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps Sunday.

Jack McInerney, Dairon Asprilla and Darlington Nagbe also scored to help the Timbers snap a three-game losing streak.

Kekuta Manneh and Pedro Morales scored for Vancouver. The Whitecaps had won three straight.

The match was part of Major League Soccer’s Rivalry Week, but the rivalry between the Timbers and the Whitecaps stretches back to 1975 when both teams were part of the NASL — long before either team joined MLS.

Fans of the two teams, along with supporters of the Seattle Sounders, created the Cascadia Cup in 2004 for the winner of the three-way contest between the teams, based on points. The Sounders are the reigning Cascadia Cup champions.

Fowles, Moore lead Lynx to 78-71 win over Storm

SEATTLE (AP) — Maya Moore had 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots, and Sylvia Fowles scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting to help the Minnesota Lynx beat the Seattle Storm 78-71 Sunday.

Bird hit a jumper that pulled the Storm within two with four minutes to go. Minnesota responded with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to pull away as Fowles made a layup, Brunson knocked down a baseline jumper and Whalen hit a 3 from the top of the key to make it 74-65.
