MARINERS-TIGERS
Tigers win on walk-off wild pitch, earning sweep of Seattle
DETROIT (AP) — Pinch runner Cameron Maybin easily scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Steve Cishek with two outs in the 10th inning Thursday, giving the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners and a four-game sweep.
The Mariners, who missed a chance when Robinson Cano struck out with a runner on third to end the 10th, lost their sixth in a row.
Steven Moya drew a one-out walk from Cishek (2-4) and Maybin pinch ran. Pinch hitter Victor Martinez singled, with an error by left fielder Seth Smith on the play putting runners on second and third. After an intentional walk to load the bases, Andrew Romine struck out.
Cishek then threw a pitch that catcher Chris Iannetta couldn’t corral, allowing Maybin to run home.
Kyle Ryan (3-2), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam Wednesday night, earned the win by escaping a jam of his own making in the 10th.
MARINERS-SAMPSON
Mariners starter leaves before throwing official pitch
DETROIT (AP) — Seattle Mariners scheduled starter Adrian Sampson has left Thursday’s game against the Detroit Tigers before throwing an official pitch.
It was supposed to be the right-hander’s second major league start. But after coming to the mound and making a warmup pitch, catcher Chris Iannetta signaled to the dugout and Sampson came out.
Manager Scott Servais summoned Vidal Nuno from the bullpen.
Since Sampson didn’t throw an actual pitch to a batter, Nuno will be the starter of record, according to the official scorer.
Sampson will appear in the box score in the pitcher’s spot in the order, despite not pitching in the game.
According to the Mariners, Sampson left the game with right elbow discomfort and will undergo further evaluation.
THUNDER-MAGIC TRADE
Thunder send Ibaka to Magic for Oladipo, Sabonis
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Thunder have traded forward Serge Ibaka to the Orlando Magic for Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and the newly drafted Domantas Sabonis, perhaps tweaking the roster to appeal to soon-to-be free agent Kevin Durant.
The Magic announced the deal.
Ibaka has been one of the league’s top defenders, but his offensive production has dipped. He averaged career highs of 15.1 points and 8.8 rebounds in 2013-14, but those numbers fell to 12.6 points and 6.8 rebounds last season.
Oladipo fills Oklahoma City’s need for a two-way shooting guard. He averaged 16 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists last season.
Sabonis, the Number 11 overall pick, is the son of former NBA player Arvydas Sabonis. The 6-foot-11 power forward from Gonzaga averaged 17.6 points and 11.8 rebounds last season.
NBA DRAFT-SPURS
Spurs take Washington guard Dejounte Murray at No. 29
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs have selected guard Dejounte Murray of Washington with the 29th pick in the NBA Draft as they enter another uncertain offseason.
The 6-foot-5 Murray averaged 16.1 points and 4.5 assists in his lone season with the Huskies. He can play either point guard or shooting guard, but is projected as a point guard in the NBA.
San Antonio traded its second round pick, No. 59 overall, to the Sacramento Kings last season for Ray McCallum. The Spurs waived McCallum on Feb. 29 to sign Andre Miller in hopes the veteran point guard would provide depth for a deep postseason run that never materialized.
The possible retirements of Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili leave the Spurs unsure of next season’s roster.
NBA DRAFT-KINGS
AP source: Kings take Chriss 8th before trading him to Suns
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Sacramento Kings drafted Washington forward Marquese Chriss with the eighth overall pick in the NBA draft Thursday and immediately sent his rights to Phoenix.
A person with knowledge of the deal says the Kings acquired the 13th and 28th picks in this year’s draft from the Suns, along with a future second-round pick and the rights to Serbian guard Bogdan Bogdanovic. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.
This marks the 10th straight season the Kings picked in the lottery, the NBA’s longest streak since the system to determine the Number 1 pick was instituted in 1985.
STORM-JACKSON
Seattle Storm to retire Lauren Jackson’s jersey
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Storm will honor three-time WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson by retiring her Number 15 jersey on July 15th.
The Storm announced their plans Thursday to honor Jackson. The jersey retirement will be the first in franchise history and take place when the Storm host Washington.
Jackson retired from basketball in late March. She spent her entire 12-year WNBA career with Seattle, helping lead the Storm to titles in 2004 and 2010. But she hadn’t played a full season since 2010 — playing just 13 games in 2011 and nine in 2012 — because of numerous surgeries on her right knee and other ailments including a left Achilles tendon injury.
Jackson was named to the extended roster for Australia for the Rio Olympics, which would have been her fifth, but decided to retire instead.
