SEAHAWKS-SCHNEIDER EXTENDED

Seahawks owner Allen announces extension for GM Schneider

NEW YORK (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have extended the contract of general manager John Schneider.

Team owner Paul Allen announced the deal on Twitter on Sunday night, saying “@Seahawks extend top GM John Schneider, key architect of our roster….Congrats!” The Seahawks later confirmed the hiring from their official account.

Schneider was entering the final year of his deal with Seattle. The Seahawks have gone to the playoffs five times in six seasons under Schneider, winning one Super Bowl and appearing in another.

Details of the extension were not announced.

Schneider was hired one week after coach Pete Carroll, and the pair reconstructed the roster together. After two 7-9 seasons to begin their tenure, Seattle has won at least 10 games in four straight seasons.

MARINERS-BLUE JAYS

Happ gets career-high 13th win, Blue Jays beat Mariners 2-0

TORONTO (AP) — J.A. Happ and three relievers combined on a one-hitter, Edwin Encarnacion hit a solo home run and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Sunday, avoiding a three-game sweep.

Happ (13-3) won his eighth straight decision and set a career-high for victories. The left-hander allowed Seattle’s lone hit, a single by Leonys Martin in the third.

Brett Cecil worked the seventh, Jason Grilli pitched the eighth and Roberto Osuna finished for his 20th save.

Encarnacion opened the scoring with a two-out drive to center in the fourth, his 27th. It was his 224th home run with the Blue Jays, breaking a tie with Vernon Wells and giving him sole possession of third place on Toronto’s all-time list. Carlos Delgado leads with 336 home runs and Jose Bautista is second with 255.

Toronto doubled its lead in the sixth. Josh Thole hit a leadoff double and advanced to third on Darwin Barney’s fielder’s choice grounder, sliding around Kyle Seager’s tag. Seattle asked for a review of umpire Jordan Baker’s call but lost the challenge. Thole scored when Josh Donaldson grounded into a double play.

Seattle left-hander Wade Miley (6-8) lost his sixth straight decision, allowing two runs and four hits in six innings.

MLS-SOUNDERS-SPORTING KC

Dwyer has 2 goals as Sporting KC beats Sounders 3-0

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Dom Dwyer scored twice and Sporting Kansas City held the Seattle Sounders without a shot until the 88th minute in a 3-0 victory Sunday.

Dwyer, charging to the top of the 6-yard box, headed home a cross by Roger Espinosa in the 21st minute.

Jacob Peterson, from just inside top of the box, hammered a feed from Saad Abdul-Salaam past the out-stretched arms of goalkeeper Stefan Frei and into the top-left corner just before halftime.

Dwyer scored his 10th goal of the season, fifth-best total in MLS, in the 79th minute.

Sporting (9-10-4) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Seattle (6-12-2) has lost five of its last seven matches, including four shutouts.

INTER MILAN-PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN

Paris Saint-Germain defeats Inter Milan

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Serge Aurier scored twice and Paris Saint-Germain beat Inter Milan 3-1 on Sunday at the University of Oregon’s Autzen Stadium.

Layvin Kurzawa also scored for PSG on a free kick in the 61st minute in the International Champions Cup match. Stevan Jovetic scored for Inter Milan on a penalty kick in stoppage time following the first half.

Autzen Stadium, the home football field of the Oregon Ducks, hosted the match, part of the International Champions Cup. Real grass was laid down on the artificial turf field, obscuring the yellow ‘O’ at midfield.

The International Champions Cup is an exhibition tournament involving 17 teams playing on four different continents. It serves a tuneup for the regular season.

Inter Milan was coming off a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake earlier in the week in Utah. Striker Mauro Icardi played in that match, and was given the day off against PSG.
