SEAHAWKS-BROWNER-INVESTIGATION

Seahawks’ Browner will not be charged in alleged assault

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner will not be charged after an allegation that he punched his girlfriend’s father at a Southern California home.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office told the Seattle Times on Wednesday that there would be no charges filed against the 32-year-old, but did not elaborate on the investigation.

Police in Pomona said that on July 5th officers were sent to a home where Browner’s girlfriend, the mother of his two children, was living. Browner lives in the same neighborhood.

The woman’s father said that after the couple had argued he and Browner got into a dispute and Browner punched him, forcing him to fall down and hurt his thumb.

Browner’s agent declined comment at the time and could not immediately be reached on Wednesday.

RED SOX-MARINERS

Trio of solo homers enough as Mariners beat Red Sox 3-1

SEATTLE (AP) — Nelson Cruz, Mike Zunino and Adam Lind hit solo home runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 on Wednesday night to hand Rick Porcello his first loss since May.

Cruz hit his 27th homer of the season leading off the second inning, Zunino hit his fifth leading off the sixth and Lind capped Seattle’s scoring with his 16th of the season with two outs in the seventh.

They were the only three hits allowed by Porcello until Zunino’s single in the eighth, but enough to hand the right-hander his first loss since May 17 against Kansas City. Porcello (14-3) had won his past eight decisions.

Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma (12-7) rebounded from a season-worst performance against the Chicago Cubs to limit Boston to five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

The Rainiers later added a run in the sixth and four in the seventh to put the game away.

Tacoma right-hander Sam Gaviglio (1-0) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Opposing starter Frank Garces (4-6) took the loss in the Pacific Coast League game after giving up four runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Tacoma improved to 9-4 against El Paso this season.

NIKE-GOLF

Nike to get out of golf equipment business

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — Nike is getting out of the golf equipment business, a surprising development that likely sends Tiger Woods and other players searching for new clubs.

Nike announced Wednesday it will stop making clubs, golf balls and golf bags, instead focusing more on its shoes and apparel, long its strength in the golf marketplace.

Woods has been with Nike since he turned pro in 1996 and remains the biggest ambassador of the Beaverton-based company. Mark Steinberg, his agent at Excel Sports Management, said that won’t change. But he also said Woods likely will have different equipment in the bag whenever he returns.

Nike also signed Rory McIlroy to a big deal in 2013. It also has Brooks Koepka, who is in position to make his first Ryder Cup team.
