MARINERS-RANGERS

Odor hits game-ending homer for Rangers in 8-7 win over M’s

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rougned Odor hit a game-ending two-run homer and the AL-best Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 8-7 on Tuesday night.

Odor’s 25th homer was a drive to the hill in center field on a 2-2 pitch from Mariners closer Edwin Diaz (0-3), who had converted his first 11 save chances of the season. Adrian Beltre started the ninth with a single, his third hit of the game.

Beltre homered for the Rangers, who won their fourth straight game and have a 10 1/2-game lead over third-place Seattle in the AL West. Houston remained 8 1/2 games back after winning earlier Tuesday against Oakland.

Odor had three hits, but twice was thrown out on the bases earlier in the game.

SEAHAWKS CUTS

Seattle releases former starting center Patrick Lewis

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have released former starting center Patrick Lewis as part of roster moves Tuesday to reach the mandatory 75-man limit.

The Seahawks also released running back Zac Brooks, a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft who was slowed by a hamstring injury and never got the needed carries to stand out.

Lewis started nine games for Seattle last year and was largely credited for stabilizing an offensive line that was shaky early in the season. But with the move of Justin Britt to center and the solid play of backup Joey Hunt in the preseason, Lewis became expendable.

Seattle also waived offensive lineman Kristjan Sokoli, and linebackers Pete Robertson and Quayshawn Nealy.

Additionally, the Seahawks waived/injured running back George Farmer, wide receiver Kevin Smith, defensive end Josh Shirley and defensive back Trovon Reed.

SOC-NWSL-REIGN-SOLO

Solo decides to end her season with NWSL’s Seattle Reign

Goalkeeper Hope Solo has decided to end her season with the Seattle Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The beleaguered goalkeeper, who was handed a six-month suspension and saw her contract with U.S. Soccer terminated last week, announced her departure from her professional club team in a statement Tuesday.

U.S. Soccer suspended Solo following disparaging comments she made about Sweden during the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, calling her opponents a “bunch of cowards” for their defensive style of play during the quarterfinals.

Before a match last weekend against the Portland Thorns, the Reign announced Solo was granted an indefinite personal leave.

BIG TEN-COACHES

Minnesota’s Hardin healthy; to play vs. Ore. St.

CHICAGO (AP) — Minnesota will have cornerback KiAnte Hardin available on Thursday night against Oregon State, according to Gophers coach Tracy Claeys.

Hardin, a sophomore, has missed some time due to an unspecified injury and was not listed on the official depth chart for the Beavers game. Hardin has been competing with redshirt freshman Ray Buford at the spot opposite senior Jalen Myrick, with both starters from last year currently with NFL teams: Eric Murray and Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Tight end Brandon Lingen (shoulder) and running back Shannon Brooks (foot) are two key players who could be on the sideline for the opener, however.
