MARINERS-ANGELS
Walker’s 3-hitter helps Mariners beat Angels 8-0
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Taijuan Walker pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout as the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 8-0 Tuesday night to win their season-high seventh straight.
Walker (6-10) was perfect through 5 2/3 innings before Kaleb Cowart hit a grounder to shortstop Ketel Marte, who threw wild to Daniel Vogelbach at first base. Vogelbach couldn’t pick the low throw and Cowart reached safely on an error charged to Marte.
Kole Calhoun ended Walker’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single through the right side in the seventh inning. Only two balls left the infield until Calhoun’s single. Walker matched a career high with 11 strikeouts — the fifth time he’s reached that mark. It was his first complete game since July 31, 2015.
Nelson Cruz and Norichika Aoki hit home runs and Seth Smith hit a grand slam to close the scoring.
Angels rookie Alex Meyer (0-3) gave up four earned runs and five hits over four innings in his fourth major league appearance.
SEAHAWKS MOVES
Seahawks waive CB Tharold Simon, sign CB Neiko Thorpe
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have waived cornerback Tharold Simon, a former fifth-round draft pick who has struggled with injuries.
Seattle also signed cornerback Neiko Thorpe, who appeared in 28 games over the past two seasons with Oakland. Thorpe had been given a second-round restricted free agent tender in the spring, but was among the final cuts by the Raiders at the conclusion of training camp. Thorpe was briefly with the Colts last week before getting cut.
Simon had gotten high praise for his improvement during training camp but his entire career has been slowed by various injuries.
Seattle also waived rookie fullback Tani Tupou and signed veteran Will Tukuafu.
The Seahawks did not add a quarterback to the active roster, another sign that Russell Wilson is expected to play Sunday at Los Angeles. Quarterback Jake Heaps, who was with Seattle in training camp, was signed to the practice squad.
T25-OREGON-BROWN
Oregon TE Pharaoh Brown looks ahead, not back
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Oregon tight end Pharaoh Brown would rather look to the future than dwell on the past when it comes to the leg injury that sidelined him all of last season.
Brown is focused on making the most of his senior season, scoring on an 11-yard touchdown pass from new Ducks quarterback Dakota Prukop on Saturday in the second quarter of Oregon’s 44-26 victory over Virginia.
He says the score felt great and noted it’s been a “long time.” He finished the game with five catches for 55 yards, including a 21-yard reception
Next up for the Ducks (2-0) is Nebraska on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, Oregon’s biggest challenge in the non-conference season. While Brown’s contribution will be a key for the Ducks, coach Mark Helfrich is aware of the risk of tasking Brown with too much, too early.
WASHINGTON STATE-TAGO
Washington State’s Tago arrested in robbery investigation
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Washington State linebacker Logan Tago has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and assault in an incident that occurred in June.
The Pullman Police Department said Tuesday that Tago was arrested, photographed and fingerprinted Monday and then immediately released from jail.
Police did not release any details of the alleged crimes. The police spokesman was not immediately available for comment Tuesday.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound sophomore played in the Cougars’ first two games this season, but it was not known if he would play Saturday against Idaho.
A Washington State team spokesman declined to comment Tuesday on Tago’s arrest, other than to say the team will continue to assist authorities.
WASHINGTON STATE-LUANI
Police recommend assault charge for Washington State safety
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — The Pullman Police Department is recommending that Washington State safety Shalom Luani be charged with second degree assault for a fight outside a pizza restaurant in August.
The Whitman County prosecuting attorney’s office will make the decision on whether Luani is ultimately charged with the felony.
Washington State football spokesman Bill Stevens said Luani will play in Saturday’s game against Idaho.
Pullman police previously told reporters that the 22-year-old Luani became verbally abusive when his order took too long, then went outside and struck the victim in the face.
Luani, an honorable mention All-Pac-12 player in 2015, did not play in Washington State’s season opening loss to Eastern Washington.
He had two interceptions in last Saturday’s loss at Boise State.
