OREGON STATE-QUARTERBACKS

Garretson out for season, Collins may move for Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State quarterback Darell Garretson will miss the rest of the season because of an ankle injury.

Garretson, who started the first six games for the Beavers, was injured in the second half of Saturday’s 19-14 loss at home to Utah. Afterward he was seen on crutches.

Beavers head coach Gary Andersen announced that Garretson was done for the season at his Monday media availability.

Backup Conor Blount, who was also on crutches following the loss to the Utes, is unavailable for Saturday’s game at No. 5 Washington. The nature of his injury was not known.

Andersen said Marcus McMaryion would start at quarterback against the Huskies. There is also the possibility that Seth Collins, who played quarterback for the Beavers last season before switching to receiver, could see snaps.

SEAHAWKS-CARROLL

Richard Sherman’s tirade overshadows Seattle’s win

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — In the future, Seattle coach Pete Carroll says he’d prefer if Richard Sherman handled his frustrations in a way that did not result in an emotional eruption on the sideline in the middle of a game.

Sherman’s shouting match with players and coaches became a teaching moment for the Seahawks yesterday, a day after Seattle rallied for a 26-24 win over Atlanta.

Carroll spent most of his Monday availability talking about emotions, philosophy and what exactly transpired on Seattle’s sideline that became as much of a story as the Seahawks improving to 4-1.

Sherman’s tirade happened after a blown coverage in Seattle’s secondary that allowed Julio Jones to run uncovered down the sideline for a 36-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Sherman was livid, screaming at anyone within earshot on the sideline and getting in the face of anyone who tried to calm him down.

Along with his tirade, Sherman was at the center of a controversial no-call on Atlanta’s final offensive play when Jones tried to pull in a deep pass from Matt Ryan. Sherman had a grip on Jones’ right arm as he attempted to catch the pass and Atlanta’s sideline screamed for a pass interference call.

Seattle received mixed news on two injuries.

Michael Bennett could play next week at Arizona after injuring his right knee on a cut block by Atlanta’s Jake Matthews. Bennett was incensed by the block, calling it unnecessary and using a few expletives to drive home his point.

The news on Luke Willson wasn’t as good. Carroll says Willson has cartilage damage and strained ligaments in his right knee that could require surgery.

FALCONS-QUINN

Quinn tells Falcons to move on after narrow loss at Seattle

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Coach Dan Quinn says there’s no reason for the Atlanta Falcons to worry about a penalty that wasn’t called late in Sunday’s narrow loss at Seattle.

Cornerback Richard Sherman pulled down Julio Jones’ right arm as the All-Pro receiver tried to catch a long pass over the middle and set up a potential game-winning field goal in the final 2 minutes.

But other than asking the NFL to look at the play and blame an official, there’s nothing left for Quinn and the Falcons to do.

Quinn says he told the team he doesn’t believe the loss came down to one play.

When Atlanta (4-2) returns Wednesday to prepare for this week’s home game against San Diego (2-4), Quinn will focus instead on improving quarterback Matt Ryan’s pass protection, creating more turnovers and sacks and helping cornerback Robert Alford avoid pass interference calls.

MARINERS-OFFSEASON SURGERIES

Mariners’ Walker, Cishek, Zych all undergo surgery

SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners pitcher Taijuan Walker had surgery Monday to remove a bone fragment from his right ankle, one of three Seattle pitchers to undergo surgery since the end of the regular season.

Walker is expected to start rehabbing immediately and should be ready for the start of spring training. Walker was bothered in the second half of the season by ankle and foot issues, including a stint on the disabled list.

Reliever Steve Cishek underwent surgery last week to repair a torn labrum in his left hip. His rehab is expected to take four to six months, putting his status for the start of spring training in question.

Reliever Tony Zych had surgery last week on his right shoulder. Zych had a biceps tendon transfer and the team said the surgery did not involve the rotator cuff or capsule in the shoulder. He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
