Oliver and Reavis improve Shot Put marks
Siuslaw’s Carissa Oliver put the shot 40-feet-5 ½ inches to finish fourth in the girls’ varsity division over the weekend at the Oregon Relays. Oliver’s mark improved her personal record by 7 ½ inches… she still holds the fourth longest distance in school history. Oliver also improved her best mark in the discus, finishing fourth with 130-feet-11 ½ inches. Trent Reavis was sixth in the shot put, 12th in the discus, and seventh in the javelin with a personal best of 164-feet-7 ½-inches. Ryan Rendon-Padilla was tenth in the javelin.
On the diamonds
Viking softball opened the Far West League season by edging the Marshield Pirates 3-2 Friday afternoon in Coos Bay. The Pirates stormed back with two wins in Florence Saturday, 4-2 and 15-1. Siuslaw will host Douglas for the first of a three-game series tomorrow.
Viking baseball was swept by the Marshfield Pirates in a three game series… Losing Saturday 9-5 and 5-2, then again Saturday 12-6. Siuslaw will be in Winston tomorrow for the first of three games against the Douglas Trojans.
Pac-12 Baseball
Number one Oregon State bounced back from Thursday’s loss to the Huskies in Seattle with a 5-2 Friday night win. On Saturday, Jake Thompson scattered six hits, three walks and eight strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings of work for a three-run shut out win. It was the Beavers’ 30th of the season; Thompson’s eighth. Oregon State will be at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles beginning Friday for a three- game series against the UCLA Bruins.
Seventh Ranked Arizona shook off a Thursday loss to Oregon with two wins and a series victory over the 22nd ranked Oregon Ducks Friday and Saturday… The Wildcats came away Friday with a 5-4 win, then put up 23 hits Saturday for an 18-4 victory. The Ducks will be in Portland against the Pilots Wednesday before hosting the Stanford Cardinal for a three-game conference series beginning Friday.
