SportsA day of ‘bests’ at Central Coast Invitational

Trent Reavis broke the Siuslaw school record with a discus throw of 160-feet-2-inches Friday afternoon to win the event at the Central Coast Invitational Track and Field meet in Florence.  Reavis also went 49-feet-9-inches to win the shot.  He was second in the javelin with a toss of 156-feet-8-inches… two inches behind his teammate Ryan Rendon-Padilla who won that event with a mark of 156-ten.

Reavis wasn’t the only thrower with a good afternoon Friday.  Carissa Oliver continued her dominance, winning the shot put at 40-feet-4-inches; and the discus with a toss of 134-feet-1-inch.  She also set a personal record of 103-feet-11-inches to finish third in the javelin.

Other notable marks for Siuslaw… Destinie Tatum won the 800-meters with her fastest time this year; 2:23.58.  Clark Hooper was first in the 300-meter hurdles with a P-R of 41.91 seconds; he was second in the 110 hurdles in 16.04.  In the boys’ 3,000 meters it was a fast night.  16 of the 18 finishers set personal records, including the winner, Hunter Murphy from Pleasant Hill.  In second was Viking Senior Jack Pickell (pih-KELL) in 9:28.48.

Prep baseball:

Siuslaw built a 7-2 lead against the Douglas Trojans in the first game of a Far West Baseball double header Friday in Florence.  The Trojans tied it up late, forcing extra innings but the Vikings came away with their first win of the season 8-7.  The Trojans won the nightcap 5-2.

Prep softball:

On the softball diamond in Winston, the Siuslaw Vikings were unable to hang on to an early lead in the opening game of a double-header against the Douglas Trojans… losing 10-7.  The Trojans came out on top in the nightcap to sweep the series, 17-7.

Pac-12 baseball

Turning to the college diamond… the Stanford Cardinal swept the Oregon Ducks in all three games of a weekend series at PK Park in Eugene, winning Friday 4-3; Saturday 8-5; and then coming away with a 10-4 victory Sunday afternoon.

In Los Angeles, the Beavers were able to come back in extra innings Friday for a 4-2 victory over the UCLA Bruins.  UCLA scored four runs in the first inning Saturday and hung on for a 7-1 win over Oregon State.  Yesterday, the Beavers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth for a2-1 win.
