Detainee Named/Officers Acted Appropriately
There is no official cause of death in the incident at the justice center on May 8th involving 2 Florence police officers and a detainee. More information was released yesterday including the name of the inmate. It was determined that David Keith Brickey died after a medical event while being released from custody. According to Lane County District Attorney, Patty Perlow there was no wrong doing on the part of either officer. And they acted with extreme caution.
“No Florence Police Officer used deadly force… given the circumstances they would have been justified using deadly force, but they did not.”
The District Attorney said that it could be a month or longer before the complete toxicology report comes back but the medical examiner was able to shed some light on Brickey’s physical condition…
“At this point what he has let us know is that Mr. Brickey had an enlarged heart and he had severe arterial blockage.
A Taser was used on Brickey, but according to investigators, it is not believed to have contributed to his death. According to the district attorney’s office, Brickey has had many law enforcement contacts over the years including incidents in California, Washington, Montana and Oregon.

There were many hotly contested races in western Lane County and now it is set for many of the boards that were looking for new members. Up for grabs were seats on the Western Lane Ambulance District, Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, Library District, Port of Siuslaw, Siuslaw School Board, and Lane Community College board. Siuslaw Public Library: Susy Lacer, Mark Tilton, Michael Falter
Port of Siuslaw: Terry Duman, Mike Buckwald, Bill Meyer
Western Lane Ambulance District: Larry Farnsworth
Jail Levy: Passed 50,349 yes 18,695 No
The most hotly contested seat was the Port of Siuslaw Commissioner position 5 which was a 3 way race between Bill Meyer, Bill Fleenor, and David Swinney. With only 26 Votes separating the top two. Meyer (1830) and Fleenor (1804). For the complete count you can go to our Coast Radio Facebook page.
Food Drives Completed
It was a week of food collections for the Florence Food Share beginning with the Ford Peanut Butter Drive sponsored by Johnston motor company. There was no set goal that they were attempting to reach, just hopes that the needs of the community would be served. Brian Johnston with Johnston Motor company said a thank you to the community is warranted:
“We appreciate them coming out doing this it’s such a good cause and I think that the Florence Food Share is going to really appreciate it.”
Johnston says that over 400 pounds of peanut butter was received and that was more than last years total by more than 10 percent. In addition to peanut butter it was also the annual letter carriers food drive and according to Norma Barton at the Florence Food Share more than 3100 pounds of food was collected. She says that they distribute about 2000 pounds a day so that amount will only last about a day and a half. Luckily she adds they do have funds set aside for the purchase of food, but what is lacking is cash donations to provide power to keep the lights on and the refrigerators running.
