Emeralds Split With Spokane
The Eugene Emeralds are 2 and 2 over the weekend. Splitting the schedule with the Spokane Indians. Spokane took the first game on Thursday evening and the Emeralds bounced back with a win on Friday (8-5) and Saturday (11-8). Sunday evening the Emeralds took a brief lead going up 2-1 in the 5th inning before Spokane scored 2 more in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. That would end up to be the final score. In the top of the 9th the Ems had a chance to tie it up when a deep single for Miguel Amaya allowed Jared Young to try and make it home from 3rd base but he was tagged out at the plate ending the game. The two teams meet again tonight at 6:30 in Spokane.
Xiong Wins Big
Ducks Freshman Golfer Norman Xiong won the prestigious Western Amateur golf tournament over the weekend. A birdie on the 22nd hole – the fourth extra hole of the round – put him over Clemson’s Doc Redmond. Xiong is the first Duck to win the tournament. Other notable winners are Jack Nicholas (1961), Phil Mickelson (1991), and Tiger Woods (1994).
Taggart Says Team is Improving
Duck Coach Willie Taggart says he is pleased with the progress his team has made in camp and says they are getting better.
“It’s good to see them flying around and communicating and making plays. We constantly talk about taking the ball away and taking pride in that and every single day those guy are trying to get takeaways and having fun doing it.”
The first game for the Ducks is at home Saturday September 2nd against Southern Utah.
