Wyden/Merkley Secure Emergency Funds
Last year’s record wildfires devastated communities across Oregon and impacted the landscape and economies of rural communities. Even Florence was affected when it sent members of the Siuslaw Valley Fire and rescue to help on several of the Oregon fires and even ones in Southern California. Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden have announced that more than 37 million dollars have been appropriated from the federal government to assist in repairing the areas worst hit by the devastating fires and even some severe winter weather. Estimates say that over 11 million dollars had to be spent on repaving, removal of tree hazards, landslide repair. Other monies will go to reimburse other resources from storms and flooding dating back to 2011. None of this money is secured for future disasters or to provide for wildfire prevention.
