Dune Restoration Work Hits Snag

The Oregon Dunes Restoration Collaborative is continuing their work along the Oregon Coast and has several projects along Florence’s beaches.  In the month of November the Forest service is set to release its environmental assessment regarding the impact that efforts are having to reduce invasive plant species.  One issue the Collaborative has run into is the potential endangered designation of a fox-like animal, the coastal Marten, that has made its way from forested areas to now reside in the brush and grasses along the coast.  Andy Vobora with Travel Lane County says they are not sure, yet, how this will affect the Collaborative’s efforts.

“Suddenly now we’ve got an endangered animal that’s not really native, and probably native to some level along the forest edge of the dune area living there, and so it’s really a conundrum.”

The collaborative met on Friday to discuss some of the issues facing them as they move forward.

ODOT Update

The Oregon Department of Transportation is planning for night work to continue on the ReVision Florence Project through November. And lane closures in both directions of U.S. 101 as crews finish up curbs along the east side of the highway.  Daytime crews are working on curb, gutter, sidewalks and driveways along both sides of the street along with utility, irrigation systems and driveways that have been affected by construction.  ODOT is also currently working on two bridge projects north of Florence, the Cape Perpetua Half Viaduct and the Cape Creek Bridge are both expected to be under construction until late 2020.

Trick or Treaters

The Florence Police department is once again offering a trick or treat alternative for youth.  Thursday, October 31st  from 5-6:30 at the Justice Center on 9th and Greenwood members of the Florence Police Auxiliary will be handing out goodies to all the ghosties, ghoulies and favorite characters looking for a treat.

Flu Season

Get ready for flu season.  According to the Oregon Health authority 41% of all emergency visits the week of October 6th through the 12th were due to influenza-like symptoms.  There has been no official outbreak reported, but it is a good reminder to wash your hands regularly, avoid crowds of people and stay home if you are experiencing symptoms.
