Paris Hero Makes Stop in Florence

Roseburg resident and national hero, Alek Skarlatos was in town last week to garner support for his run for congress.  Skarlatos will be up against long-time democratic congressman Peter DeFazio in 2020.  Skarlatos says his platform is based on three basic tenets.  Oregon’s logging industry, the second amendment and heath care for veterans.

“I’d like to see some reform in the VA system, because I am a veteran myself and we have veterans killing themselves in VA parking lots and dying just because of wait times.  I mean, I just don’t think the government does a good job of medical care.”

Skarlatos was one of three men that stopped a terrorist attack on a train in Paris in 2015.  He also favors increasing the amount of logging in Oregon and opposes bans on assault type rifles.

“People get the impression, because of the media and a lot of misconceptions that assault weapons, which they actually aren’t, are somehow more lethal, and they’re not.  A semi-automatic AR-15 is no more lethal, in my opinion than a 9 mm handgun.”

Skarlatos is hoping to unseat DeFazio for the 4th congressional district.  DeFazio has been the representative since 1987

ReVision Update

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation paving crews are scheduled to begin mainline paving beginning this evening at 5pm.  Lane closures will move both directions of traffic to the west side of Highway 101.  Flaggers will be present.  Paving is expected to continue through Thursday of this week.  Crews will be finishing up curb work along the 101 stretch from Highway 126 to the Siuslaw River Bridge.  The project is still slated to be completed by late November.  Utility work and street lighting is still in progress.

Fall Community Clean-Up

This Saturday the City of Florence will present the Fall Community Clean-up from 9am until 2pm.  This will be a free cleanup for Florence residents in the parking lot of Siuslaw High School.  Acceptable collectables are appliances, computers, and electronics, block Styrofoam, furniture, useable building materials, paint and other household items and up to 5 tires.  Residents are asked not to bring hazardous waste, garbage, prescription drugs, fluorescent light bulbs, oversized items like boats or hot tubs or car parts.
