City Council Meeting
The Florence City Council will meet this evening at 5:30 at City Hall. The meeting will begin with Employee Recognitions for years of service and will also introduce new employees and honor retirees. On the action items for the city the council will cover several resolutions regarding internal control policy, allowable costs policy and the consideration of an approval of a water conversation grant of 156,500 from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department for the Rolling Dunes Park Improvements project. There will also be an annual review of the Florence City Manager and consideration of approval for a liquor license for the Green Room and the Playhouse located at 308 Laurel Street.
Art Exposed
Next Monday will be the official unveiling of the city’s latest Art Exposed gallery exhibits. The city’s Public Arts Committee will offer a walking tour of the new artwork around the city beginning at 4:15 on the 24th of October. There are 8 new pieces in the display and the tour will cover all of them.
“Globster”
Some marine officials are calling what a yachats couple discovered on the beach near Florence on Wednesday of last week a globster. The large blob, according to some officials is likely not a rare creature from the deep, but rather the large decomposing carcass of a whale.
HIP Survey Concludes Today
Today is the final day to give your feedback for the city of Florence’s Housing Implementation Plan. Links to the survey can be found at the city’s website, ci.florence.or.us. the Housing implementation Plan will help the city determine how to move forward in solving the housing crisis. The plan looks at strategies, programs and funding opportunities as well as assisting in local sustainability and the assurance that Florence is conforming with the housing requirements set forth by the state of Oregon.
Air Quality Alert
There is an Air Quality Alert in effect until 5 pm this evening for the coastal area including Florence and Mapleton. While the alert is in effect the current air quality index for the Florence area is good and is subject to change through the day. The current air quality is compromised by wildfire smoke from fires burning in the state.
Mussel Harvesting Closed
Mussel harvesting has been closed for the entire coast of Oregon. On Friday the Oregon Department of Agriculture issued the closure due to high levels of domoic acid found in the shellfish. Razor clamming also remains closed along the coast line but bay clam and crab harvesting remains open. In order for harvesting of the prohibited items to reopen the levels of acid must be below the danger level for two consecutive test periods. Testing occurs twice monthly.
