Another Scam Pops Up

Yet another scam has come to light for the Florence Community.  Florence Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Betting Hannigan says that a docu-sign email has been going around that is purportedly from the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce.  Hannigan says that several people have said they have received the notification and that even she found a copy in her spam email.  The spam letter does not have a chamber return address and asks you not to share the email or the access code provided.  Hannigan says do not open the email.  It is fraudulent.  During the holiday season many attempts are made to steal money and groups are becoming more and more sophisticated in their approach.  The latest scam comes on the heels of an OPB announcement of fraudulent calls and texts.  Scammers are using local entities to seem more valid.  If you feel that something that you have received may be an attempt at a scam, contact authorities and do not respond.  It is always a good idea to contact the business or financial institution directly when you have questions about a call, email or text.

Holiday Travel

AAA Oregon is predicting a heavy holiday travel schedule for the roads this Christmas and New Years.  Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says about 1.6 million Oregonians will be on the roads making it the third busiest holiday season since 2000.  With the news of heavy travel, Dodds says there is good news.  Gasoline prices in Oregon have dropped another 16 cents from last week and she says it looks like that will continue to drop into the new year.  The Oregon average for regular gas is at $3.82 a gallon and in Florence the average price has further dropped since earlier reports this week.  The average is now $3.69 a gallon with the cheapest price at $3.65 and the highest price at $3.76.

Hannigan Named Chair of State Chamber Board

Bettina Hannigan, the president and CEO of the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce has been elected as the Chairperson  for the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce board of directors of which she has been a member since 2019.  Hannigan will continue in her role here in Florence while also helping to promote businesses in small and large communities.  Hannigan says anytime that Florence is able to be represented on a statewide scale is a win for the community boosting exposure and access to resources.

DUII Increased Enforcement

Beginning Friday in Florence and around the state the law enforcement divisions will be working on increased enforcement for drivers that may consider driving impaired.  The increased presence will cover the Christmas and New Years holidays.  In addition to their regular duties, there will be added patrols specifically dedicated to DUII related issues.  Money for the increased patrols comes from state grants released from the Oregon Department of Transportation
