Senior Center
A recent name change at the Florence Senior Center more accurately reflects what goes on inside the facility on Kingwood Street.
“We have a long list of activities here. Every day is different.”
Sue James is the Administrative Assistant at the center that recently change its name to the Florence Senior Activity Center. On any given weekday, she says, you’ll find card games, billiards, a variety of different exercise classes, musical rehearsals and, twice each week the center also serves lunch.
“We have lunches on Tuesday and Thursday from 11 to noon.”
The nutritional lunch is just $8 per person and James says there is often music. They also do a special lunch, one Friday each month that is intended as a fund raiser to help offset operating costs. James, along with the center’s board president Norm Leeling are featured on this week’s Our Town.
New Councilors
This evening the Florence City Council will hold its last meeting with the current members and transition to the newly elected council. There is one action item before the current council and that is to consider approving an ordinance that will adopt the Oregon Building Codes Division rule changes. The council heard the first reading at their December 12th meeting. The council will offer final comments. After adjournment there will be a reception to thank councilor Woody Woodbury and Mayor Joe Henry for their service to the community. After the reception the new council members will take their oath of office and consider making some changes to the meeting schedule. The incoming council has expressed a desire to hold work sessions earlier in the mornings and will consider a resolution to approve the move to 8:30 am on meeting days. There will also be a reception between the two meetings. This evening’s meeting will be at City Hall beginning at 5:30
