Sheriff To Visit Florence on Jail Levy

A request for voter approval of a “local option” tax levy to help pay for services at the Lane County Jail is the topic of a public information session scheduled for this Saturday in Florence.  Sheriff Cliff Harrold will be at Siuslaw Public Library to talk about ballot measure 20-340.  That is on the May 16th Special Districts election and, if approved by voters, would extend a previous approval of 55-cents per thousand dollars of assessed value levy on property taxes.  Sheriff Harold intends to talk about how approval would not increase current property taxes, and if approved, would continue to pay for more than half of the Lane County Jail operations.

“This isn’t an increase, we’re just asking for a renewal, please just keep paying the same tax you have been paying since 2013 so we can continue to provide the service.”

The session will be in the Bromley Room at Siuslaw Public Library beginning at 5 PM.  The library is neither sponsoring nor endorsing the information session or ballot measure.

Tax Day

Today is the final day to submit your taxes without penalty.  The Filing Deadline is at midnight tonight and you taxes must have an April 18th postmark, which likely means that you will have to have them  turned in by the last post office pickup time or file them electronically.  You can also file an extension by going to irs.gov.

Florence City Council

There were several line items at last night’s city council meeting with the introduction of planning commission members, but the meeting started off with a recognition of a member of the City of Florence team that has spent the last 30 years serving the people of Florence. Eric Rines was  commended for his service and Wendy Farley Campbell sung his praises. Including this quote from former city manager Rodger Bennett:

“He is people aware, quick to help and even quicker to recognize the best in other people.  He is loyal to his employer, supportive of his customers and excited to play a part in improving and maintaining the quality of life in the community he loves.”

The council also approved the vendor fair street closing for Rhododendron Festival on Maple street between Bay Street and 1st street. And Lane County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Carl Wilkerson spoke to the council regarding the upcoming jail levy renewal.
