Pulse Point
It is new to the Florence Area, an app for your phone that could save a life. Pulse Point has been in operations over the past several years in larger communities like Eugene and Portland, but in recent months the app has been introduced to Florence and after a couple of months local fire and EMS and Peace Harbor hospital is getting the word out about it. The App alerts users of a cardiac arrest within a half mile and also releases the location of the closest Automated External Defibrillator or AED. Deputy Chief of Western Lane Fire and EMS Authority.
“The goal of the application is that people that are certified with CPR and AED use, that they can actually go there and start the first parts of CPR to extend the chance of survival that AHA (the American Heart Association) preaches.”
Dr. Chris Poulson is a Eugene physician that has been working with the Pulse Point App for several years. He says that there are currently more than 20,000 Eugene area individuals that have the app on their phone.
“It has certainly been utilized a number of times over the years. It has been very impactful in saving people’s lives.”
The Pulse Point app is a free app and can be downloaded to your phone. There are a few steps to set it up for your home area, but House says if help is needed someone would merely need to call the fire house for help. At 997-3212.

Last Night’s ribbon cutting at the campus of Lane Community College was well attended by the Florence community. It was the first time many were able to view the recent upgrades to the facility that included seismic upgrades and reimagined classrooms. It was also the first time many were introduced to the new President of the college, Dr. Stephanie Bulger. In her comments Dr. Bulger mentioned the work and the people behind the work that readied the college to once again receive students.
“For more that 4 decades the Florence Center has been a beacon of lifelong learning, a hub of community engagement and a cornerstone of advancement for Western Lane County.”
She also recognized the vision of two of the college’s founding members Dr. Albert J. Brauer founding board of education member and Alfred E. Owens the first director. After comments and introductions, the college dispensed several scholarships to students totaling more than 10,000 dollars as well as a scholarship from the Florence Rotary club.
Pet Warning for 4th Festivities
If you haven’t had your pets “microchipped”, you should consider doing it soon. That’s according to Oregon Coast Humane Society’s executive director Elizabeth Thompson.
“July 4th is the biggest push in shelters nationwide for strays coming in. That’s when the most animals get lost.”
Just in time for the Fourth, the society will be having a microchip and vaccine clinic. That is coming up Saturday, June 24th at the shelter on Rhododendron Drive. The chips are $40 and you can get any vaccines at the same time for just $20. Thompson says you’ll need to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 541-997-4277, or you can go to Oregon-coast-humane-society-dot-org.
Gas Prices
Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says gas prices are on the rise again with the state jumping 17 cents per gallon in just one week. Here in the Florence area stations were sporting numbers above 4 dollars as well with the average price of $4.22 a gallon for regular. Dodds says robust demand for fuel is driving the cost up and that higher prices could come as maintenance on the Olympic pipeline that runs from Blaine Washington to Portland is forthcoming.
