School to Lose Some Federal Money

Several added programs, and the staff to support them, at Siuslaw Schools have been paid for by Federal Covid recovery payments.  Those programs are coming to an end and Superintendent Andy Grzeskowiak has been making financial preparations for that eventuality.

“We were going to have to do that either this year or next year, we get to do it this year and preserve those jobs indefinitely.”

However, the ongoing stalemate in Salem has stalled that.  But, because of a very rosy revenue forecast in May, lawmakers are confident the final amount of state support will be no less than $9.9-billion which is the amount included in the governor’s budget proposal earlier this year.  According to Grzeskowiak,

“We’ve built our budget on the current state number,  9-9.

But he adds, that same revenue forecast has led many in Salem to believe that once the capital logjam is broken, the final school funding formula will likely be $10.2-million.  Either way, he says, those additional jobs and programs will be preserved.

Planning Commission Seat Vacancy

The city of Florence Planning commission is still looking to fill one seat on the committee.  Applications are being received until Sunday.  The seat can be filled either by someone within the city limits or outside the city limits.  The position is to fill the remainder of the term set to expire in May of 2026.  Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday each month at 5:30 pm.  The commission reviews and makes recommendations on land use and zoning rules and regulations and serves as the Design Review Board.
