Safe Fireworks
“Keep it legal, keep it safe” is the message from the Oregon State Fire Marshal as the retail fireworks season opens. State law regulates the sale of fireworks to just a brief period surrounding the Fourth of July holiday. They went on sale at permitted retailers Friday. Sales must end no later than Thursday, July 6th. Just because fireworks are sold at a retailer that has a valid permit though doesn’t mean they can be used just anywhere. Possession and use of fireworks are prohibited in National Parks, National Forests, BLM lands and on State beaches, parks and campgrounds. They’re prohibited on Florence city streets and rights of way, as well as on Port of Siuslaw properties.

Marijuana Bust
Approximately 23-hundred marijuana plants, $20-thousand in cash and a 2023 Dodge truck were seized last week from a property southeast of Florence. Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies and personnel from the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency served a search warrant June 20th at 7400 Maple Creek Road. During the warrant service Chanh Nguyen was detained. Officials estimated that the grow operation had been ongoing for about two years and “typically” grew up to five-thousand plants at a time. Deputies did not say if Nguyen was formally charged, but he had previously been arrested in Washington State for similar activities.
