Wildfire Evacuation Starts and Ends (Near Waldport)

An example of the dangers of wildfire even along the coast happened yesterday just north of Yachats.  Lincoln County sheriff’s office sent 9 units to help evacuate the Wakonda Beach recreation area yesterday afternoon.  The Level 3, or go now, evacuation notice was given around 4 pm yesterday causing the closing of highway 101 in both directions.  Fire and emergency crews responded quickly to Governor Patterson State Park and worked to extinguish the fire.  Highway 101 was reopened by 7:45 last night.  There were no reports on the cause of the blaze.  This is a reminder of how quickly a situation can change, whether it be from campfires or fireworks ahead of the 4th of July holiday.  Dry weather and windy conditions are expected through Wednesday.

Fireworks

Related to the dangers of wildfires and fireworks, WLFEA Fire Chief Michael Schick says if you are going to be doing fireworks, make sure they are legally purchased.

“There are some legal fireworks in Oregon, it’s those that you purchase at the licensed, inspected retail outlets.  Anything that comes from out of state is illegal in Oregon.”

Schick says his preference is that people enjoy the community wide displays lake the one over this past weekend on Siltcoos Lake at Darlings’ Resort, or the traditional Fourth of July display over the Siuslaw River in Old Town.

Heat Advisory

A heat advisory is being issued for areas east of Florence for the 4th of July holiday through Wednesday afternoon.  Temperatures in Mapleton are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s with the heat extending into the valley.  Take necessary precautions to stay safe, cool and hydrated if traveling away from the coast.

Sutton Boat Launch Grant

The Oregon State Marine Board approved ten facility grants last week (June 28th) valued at more than $2-million.  One of the ten grants, valued at more than $449-thousand, will go to the Siuslaw National Forest for a rehabilitation project of the Sutton Lake Boat Launch and Boarding Docks.  The U.S. Forest Service is providing a match of $150-thousand to fully fund the project.  Work on the project is scheduled to begin later this year.

Scavenger Hunt

The City of Florence Block Party on July 14th will also coincide with the Florence Community Scavenger Hunt.  The Hunt began at midnight on Saturday and continues through the 16th.  The Hunt consists of three missions, Photo, Video and Bonus missions and new missions will be released today, on July 7th, 11th and 14th.  Participants will have to download the GooseChase app on their phone which is available through the apple and android stores.  They will then have to set up an account and select the 2023 Florence Community Scavenger Hunt game.  Players with the most points (top 3-5) will receive a Florence Swag Bag.
