Planning Commission
There is no City Council meeting this evening. The City Council and Planning Commission will meet tomorrow for a joint work session to discuss the Transportation System Plan Project at 5:30. The group will receive a consultation presentation and go over proposed work products and public outreach. The meeting will be followed by a Planning Commission meeting at 7:30. On their agenda is a resolution to the Housing Implementation Plan phase II Housing Code Update. Both meetings will take place at City Hall.
Boys and Girls Club – Air Academy
The Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County has geared up for summer with activities. In recent years one of the most popular summertime events has been the Florence Air Academy directed by local businessman and pilot Terry Tomeny. The academy is for 12-18 year olds with an interest in aviation. They cover ground school classes, aviation history and at the end of the program the students will get to fly. Spaces are limited and signups end this Friday. For non-Club members the cost is $100. That includes a Club membership fee of $25 and $75 for the program. SOS Hiring
Siuslaw Outreach Services is currently looking to fill an empty slot on its staff. The position is one of a Crisis Assistance Program Advocate. The position works with the department manager in several different areas including case management and homelessness intervention. The candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check, be a licensed drive with the state of Oregon and have good communication and organizational skills. Block Party
The City is gearing up for its annual block party this Friday. The city will be closing off Bay street from Laurel to the Siuslaw River Bridge for the afternoon and evening. Festivities will begin at 5 pm and entertainment will be provided by 5 guys named Moe. There will be games for all ages, non-profit groups will also be set up and there will be tasty treats available. The event will last until 10 pm.
Siuslaw Awards
The 15th annual Siuslaw Awards will be held on the 21st of July. The annual awards consist of 7 categories. Bold New Business features Ocean Grinds Coffee, Fidelity National Title, Linda Did It Deli, and Raining Cats and Dogs. Excellence in Customer Service features Beth Rudometkin with American Pacific Mortgage, Custom Profile Engraving, the Sigh Shop/Copier Doctor and US Bead Warehouse. The Profound difference Award with Florence Food Share, Florence Kiwanis Club, Soroptimist of Florence, Western Lane Community foundation. Heart on Their Sleeve: Hyak, Oregon Pacific Bank, Sea Lion Caves and Laura Wilson Windemere Realty. Aurora Borealis: Jade Rehder of RAIN, Erin Reynolds, City of Florence, Elizabeth Thompson, Oregon Coast Humane Society, and Kristin Anderson of FRAA. Innovation is Everything: Cindy Wobbe Estate Sales, Hukilau Restaurant, Laughing Crab Gallery and Tasting room and Pacific Hope Aesthetics. The final award of the evening to be presented is the Stu Johnston Business of the Year. It features Buckwald and Hornung CPAS, Coast Radio, Lofy Construction, Port of Siuslaw and the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum. The event will be held at Three Rivers Casino Event Center.
