New Coaches Hired
Siuslaw High School Athletic Director Chris Johnson has disclosed the name of the new Head Baseball coach for the Siuslaw Vikings. Alumnus and Florence native Derek Wells has been selected from the candidates. Wells was a former Siuslaw baseball standout, during his time at Siuslaw he was named Far West League Player of the Year and was a First Team All-State pitcher and a member of Siuslaw’s first league championship team. Wells also pitched in the 1996 Babe Ruth World Series. Wells says it is an honor to be selected as the next Siuslaw Varsity Baseball coach and looks forward to the future success of Siuslaw Baseball.
In Addition 5th grade Siuslaw Teacher Amanda Richards has been added to the high school softball staff. Richards, after college, worked with the University of Tennessee pitching and catching group and coached at Maize High School in Wichita, Kansas. Richards also works with the Siuslaw volleyball team.
Athlete of the Week
The Sports Club the Siuslaw News and Coast Radio Sports congratulate Viking junior Volleyball player Rhianna Lane as this week’s athlete of the week. Rhianna racked up 55 kills and 12 blocks in Siuslaw’s three tournament wins on Saturday defeating Gladstone, Newport and Junction City.
Honorable Mention goes to sophomore Viking football’s Micah Blankenship who threw for 150 yards with 3 touchdowns and 75 yards rushing in Friday’s win at home over the Creswell Bulldogs.
On The Schedule
Boys JV soccer has been cancelled for today. Varsity boys will be playing at Creswell Middle school. Girls varsity soccer will play Creswell on Hans Peterson Field. Glen Butler Court will be the site for Viking Volleyball this evening at 6:30 against Harrisburg.
