Ice Storm Cleanup Scheduled for Hwy 36
Work on the cleanup following a severe ice storm in January is still going on. Efforts on Highway 36 between Mapleton and Junction City have been making headway, but over the next two weeks travelers in the Deadwood area should expect delays and even temporary closures. That’s because the Oregon Department of Transportation will be operating large equipment between now and April 12th to remove some of the larger trees on hillsides above the road. Between 7 AM and 5 PM most delays will be 20 minutes or less, but closures could go up to an hour in some cases. O-DOT suggests to avoid Highway 36 if you can, but if you must use the route they’ll regularly update Tripcheck-dot-com.
Popular Crabbing Dock Damaged
Damage to the popular Windy Cove Crab and Fishing Dock near the mouth of the Umpqua River is going to take longer than originally estimated. The Douglas County Parks Department now says the damage that followed a “high water event” in late January was more severe than originally thought; plus there are several other regulatory steps they have to follow. One other factor is the discovery of a large log trapped beneath the dock that has resisted attempts to remove it. A diver is scheduled to survey the log and any other possible damage under the water line today. (Monday) Tamara Howell with Douglas County says the repair project is a high priority and they are working diligently to get it completed sometime this summer.
