Candidates For Council

The November election will see two seats available on the Florence City Council as well as the Mayoral seat.  Current Mayor Rob Ward has already indicated his intentions to see another term as mayor.  There is currently no opposition for him.  The two council seats are that of Sally Wantz and Bill Meyer.  Both have petitioned to continue to serve.  As of today there is only one new candidate, and that is former Siuslaw News reporter Mark Brennan.  Candidates are currently collecting signatures to appear on the November ballot.  Filing deadline for the Mayoral and council seats is August 13th.

Siuslaw Awards

The annual Siuslaw Awards ceremony will be on July 25th at the Florence Events Center.  This year the Stu Johnston Business of the Year Award features 5 businesses.  Coastal Fitness, PeaceHealth/Peace Harbor Medical Center, 1285 Restobar, Sand Master Park and Three Rivers Casino Resort.  Businesses that evening will be recognized in several categories including Excellence in Customer Service, Innovation, and bold new business.  Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Bettina Hannigan says last years ceremony sold out and encourages individuals or businesses that would like to attend to get their tickets now.  Tickets can be purchased at florencechamber.com

Blood Needed

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is sometimes referred to as the “100 deadliest days” by many in the medical field. Jordan Hardman with Bloodworks Northwest says that’s because there are more travelers on the road.

“It is where we see a really big increase during summertime of any kind of accident, usually automobile accidents.”

More traffic crashes usually means that hospitals and trauma centers may run dangerously low on blood supplies.  Hardman says the bloodmobile will be in Florence next week at Safeway, Monday July 15th.

“We do encourage appointments.  But if there are appointments available on the day of we will accept people walking in.”

Time slots between ten and four are available.  Hardman says go to bloodworksnw-dot-org-slash-giveblood to make yours.
