Two Arrested For Attempting to Steal Wire

A suspicious power outage on Monday in the area of Siuslaw River Road and Richardson Upriver road caused employees with Blachly-Lane Electric to respond. Upon arrival at the site of the outage the employees notice a vehicle stuck in the mud and two power poles that had been cut down.  Two individuals were still in the stuck vehicle and a Lane County Sheriffs deputy and an Oregon State Trooper responded to the call from the utility.  The two individuals, identified as Nathan Shawn Reynolds and Cody Ray Reynolds, both 32 were arrested.  Blachly-Lane representatives estimated the damage to be more than $30,000.  According to Lane County Sheriff’s office damage was also done to Century Link.  The two individuals were charged with theft in the 2nd degree, 1st degree criminal mischief and trespass in the 2nd degree.  Cody Reynolds was also arrested for violating a restraining order.  Service was eventually restored to the area.

Gas Prices Remain Flat

Expectation were that gas prices would increase over the holiday weekend and with the summer driving season in full swing demand would be high, however Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says prices have come down again in Oregon.  the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state has dropped below $4.00 a gallon at $3.99.  the demand for gas was lower than expected and despite storms impacting the Midwest prices are relatively flat.  Here on the coast the average price of a gallon of regular is $3.74.

Siuslaw Awards

The Siuslaw Awards is coming up on July 25th.  the evening is dedicated to celebrating businesses and individuals that have contributed to the community, not only through business, but through philanthropy.  The evening will also see the selection of the Florence First Citizen and introduce the Future First Citizen, Cate Waggoner to the attendees.  Ticket sales for the event end this Friday and can be purchased online at florencechamber.com.  this year’s nominees for First Citizen are Jenna Bartlett who has Siuslaw Consulting Service and formerly editor of the Siuslaw News.  Dan Lofy local contractor and an active volunteer and Bonnie MacDuffie, who has worked as a volunteer in the community for many events and charities over the years.

Humane Society Estate Sale

The Oregon Coast Humane Society is having a crafty estate sale this weekend and beginning tomorrow there will be a pre-sale for invited guests, the public sale begins on Friday and goes through Saturday afternoon.  The sale will be  held at the Vintage house next door to the Humane Society Thrift Store on Bay Street.  The sale for the public will begin at 10 am Friday.
