Bird Outs Power

Mother Nature was responsible for the power outage in the 20th street area yesterday morning.  But it wasn’t a storm, wind or even a tree branch.  This time it was a crow that caused an arc and a transformer to fail.  Central Lincoln PUD was called out at about 9:53 yesterday morning to assess and repair the outage.  They arrived shortly after and discovered the problem.  The crew had service to the area restored by 10:45.  The area affected by the failure was between 20th and 22nd streets.

Women Equality Day

August 26th marks Women’s Equality Day commemorating the passage of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. More than a century later, women have made progress but more work needs to be done. Women have made major gains in elected positions across the country. In Oregon, they make up more than 40 percent of the seats in the legislature, the 13th highest percentage in the country. Libra Forde, co-chair of the Oregon Commission for Women, says the 19th Amendment was a big accomplishment, but it didn’t end the push for women’s progress.

“As they saw a need during their time for us to have availability and access to things that they didn’t have, I think most of the women – especially the women of the commission – we see a need to do the same thing for things that maybe women have not had access to yet and kind of taking the torch that’s been passed to us.”

Forde highlights some of the issues where Oregon lawmakers could go further, such as being more vigorous protecting women from domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. On August 26th, 1920, the U-S Secretary of State completed the ratification process for the 19th Amendment, ensuring women the right to vote.

Road Closure

The City of Florence would like to remind residents that the Rhododendron realignment project is continuing to make progress, but that the section from New Hope Road to Wildwinds is closed to all traffic, including bicycle and pedestrians.  Work crews continue to work on a soil retaining barrier as well as road work.  Accessing the Oregon Coast Humane Society and the County Transfer Station will come from the north side of Rhododendron at 35th street.  The city posts updates on a weekly basis on it homepage at ci.florence.or.us.
