Hoyle Visits Florence

U.S. Representative Val Hoyle was in town this week to look at a couple of projects that are occurring along her district.  Here in Florence and Mapleton it is a reinforcement of land along the Siuslaw River to prevent slides that would negatively impact it. A Project congress was able to invest in.

“$800,000 to construct what is called a sea-camp pile. You put poles in to stabilize from protections of a land slide on the banks of the Siuslaw river and it will help us to make repairs to the public facilities storm water utility.

In Coos Bay it was a look into projects regarding the improvement of the bay and the potential for having a major port for goods arriving and departing the U.S.. She says that while they did not get the Mega Grant they were hoping for, there is still a grant that would help them with rail construction which is a major part of the project.

“Cause one of the things that this port will do is bring containers in a the containers will go straight to rail and we’ll need the upgrades so that they can go to the mid-west.”

Representative Holye said during the timber days Coos Bay was the third busiest port in the country.  She also spoke on timber, wildfires and the fentanyl epidemic. You can hear all of that Val Hoyle had to say on next week’s Our Town.

Labor Day Gas Prices

Labor Day approaches and travel will be a little cheaper than in recent months according to Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon.  Dodds says prices continue to drop ahead of the holiday with Oregon dropping 5 cents to $3.80 a gallon.  This is almost a dollar cheaper than last year at this time.  The Florence price of a gallon of regular is averaging $3.40 a gallon also cheaper than last Labor Day.  Dodds says while travel for this holiday is up from last year, it only represents about a 9% increase.

Holiday Schedule

The city of Florence offices will be closed on Monday, Labor Day in observance of the holiday. Facililties work will still be going as well as police and fire, but the planning department and utility payment along with office personnel will be taking the day off.  City Council is also on a short break and will not have another meeting until the 16th of September.

Realignment Project

The soil nail wall being constructed for the Rhododendron realignment project has been completed. And 400 feet of the retaining wall system is now in place.  The rest of the week crews will be building curbs along the path on the river’s edge as well as preparing for paving of the path. Crews will also be placing more of the retaining wall system along the east side of the construction.
