Crash Details
Oregon State Police responded to a four-vehicle crash on Highway 126 near milepost 19 in Lane County on Tuesday at 3:15 PM. A preliminary investigation revealed that a westbound Kenworth log truck, driven by Billy Lee Bales Coder of Myrtle Point, experienced catastrophic engine failure inside the Knowles Creek Tunnel, causing a 200-yard oil spill. A westbound Nissan Rogue, driven by Mary Helen Dale of Florence, lost control in the oil slick and collided with the Kenworth. Shortly after, a Toyota Prius, driven by Radiant Jaime Gaines of Eugene, also lost control, crossing into the eastbound lane and striking a Chevrolet HHR, driven by Christine Dorene Weathers of Florence, head-on. Weathers was pronounced dead at the scene. Gaines suffered serious injuries and was transported to a medical center, while Dale and Coder were unharmed. The highway was closed for nearly 9.5 hours for investigation. The cause of the crash is still under review.
Property Taxes Mailed
The 2024-2025 property tax statements were mailed starting October 21, and are now available online, along with information on county value trends and levy changes. The first payment is due November 15. Lane County Assessment and Taxation collects property tax for 85 taxing districts, including cities, schools, and rural fire districts. This year, total property tax levies amount to $720.9 million, a 2.9 percent increase from last year. The increase reflects new or renewed levies, changes in assessed values, and exemptions. Road Alignment Completion
The City of Florence is excited to announce the reopening of Rhododendron Drive following the completion of the Realignment and Improvement Project. A celebration will take place Friday, November 1st, at 10 AM, featuring remarks from Mayor Ward and City Council members. The project improved safety and accessibility, with the road officially opening to traffic by noon. However, Rhododendron Drive will remain closed during the celebration and will reopen once the event concludes. Join the celebration at the Siuslaw River Overlook. Attendees should enter via 9th Street, with City staff assisting with parking access.
Great Pumpkin Giveaway
The 36th annual Original Great Pumpkin giveaway will be happening this afternoon at the Saw Shop on 6th street. The annual giveaway hosted by Coast Radio and Florence True Value will see hundreds of pumpkins go to area children under the age of 18. The free event will also include bags of candy and hot dogs and A&W Root Beer served up by the local Lions Club. The pumpkins will be given out sharply at 4pm, but people are invited to come out early for the hot dogs and other activities. KCST will be broadcasting live beginning at 3:30.
