School Commitee Adresses Policy
The Siuslaw School District Policy Committee will meet on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 4:00 PM at the district office, 2111 Oak Street in Florence. Faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome, though no quorum will be established. The committee will review proposed changes to several policies, which will be presented at the school board meeting on November 20. Key topics include an update to Policy BCBA-AR(1), adding a scholarship for student board representatives, and a revision of Policy EBC on emergency plans. Other policies, including those on Section 504 student support and public records requests, will also be reviewed. Photo Contest
The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting amateur and professional photographers to showcase the charm of Oregon’s Coastal Playground with their best photos. Chamber president and CEO Bettina Hannigan says they’re looking for images that capture the fun, beauty, and unique landmarks within 20 miles of Florence. The winning entry will receive a $250 cash prize and be featured in the Chamber’s visitor guide, printed materials, and online. OCF Grants
The Oregon Community Foundation’s Community Grants program will open applications for its 2025 Spring Cycle on December 3, 2024, closing on January 14, 2025. This cycle focuses on providing general operating support, with priority given to small rural organizations, culturally specific groups, and culturally responsive organizations. Key dates, funding priorities, and sample application answers are available on the Community Grants website. Arts and culture nonprofits are encouraged to apply for the Arts and Culture Rebuilding Program instead, a separate $8 million investment that will fund these organizations over three years. Deadwood Man Sentenced
Jericho Jamison who was charged with killing three people near Deadwood in 2022 will spend 10 years in prison following a plea deal. On February 15, 2022, Lane County deputies responded to reports of a shooting, discovering three victims with fatal injuries. Authorities later arrested the 27-year-old on murder charges, alleging he shot Elijah Geil, Brian Harry, and Shauna Allen after a dispute. Initially facing three first-degree murder charges, Jamison accepted a deal, pleading guilty to two manslaughter counts and unlawful weapon use. Court records show he was sentenced on November 7 to 10 years in prison, plus three years of supervision after release.
